Scarf Question 1: Silk vs Silk blend what's the difference? (hint: think Gin Tonic)

Hi there, do you own a silk or silk blend scarf (or more!) from Hanoi Original Studio? I’d like to take this opportunity to answer some common questions and share some important tips to help you keep your silk looking great!

Scarf question 1: Silk vs Cotton Silk, what's the difference? (hint: think Gin Tonic)

I love silk and its extraordinary properties: it’s natural, stunning, lightweight, breathable, and impressively strong for how thin it is. However, with our diverse daily activities, we often have more choices.

Nowadays, besides pure silk, we also have silk blends such as cotton-silk and wool-silk. What's the difference?

Think of silk blends like a gin and tonic. You can have 100% gin and 100% tonic water in two separate glasses. But when blended in the right ratio and method, you create a cocktail that’s a favorite for many, gin and tonic!

Silk is often mixed with cashmere, wool, or cotton. For example, cotton-silk is soft, delicate, and more durable than pure silk, combining the best of both worlds. Which one is better? It’s a matter of personal preference. For instance, cotton-silk is my top choice for a bushwalk or hike, while wool-silk provides extra warmth and comfort for autumn.

At Hanoi Original Studio, I carefully select primarily 100% top-grade Mulberry silk, as well as cotton-silk in various thicknesses: 9, 14, 16, and the luxurious 18 momme. Check out these scarves to see and feel the difference for yourself.

So, how to care for your scarf?

For now, all that matters is that you can cold machine-wash your scarf on a gentle cycle, separate from other garments. Even better, you can place it in a steamer cupboard to conveniently sanitise, deodorise, dry, and smooth your scarf.
  • Silk is also safe to hand wash. Here’s how:
  • Place your silk or silk blend scarf in lukewarm to cold water.
  • Let it soak for 2–3 minutes.
  • Swish slowly and gently.
  • Rinse with fresh water.
  • Lay flat to dry.
To smooth out wrinkles, the best option is a steam iron—it works its magic in seconds! If you don’t have one, a gentle iron on the silk setting will do the trick.

Now, that’s about six minutes of reading! For those who’ve made it to this point, thank you so much. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

If you think this could be helpful to someone, feel free to forward it to them.
